The countdown to 2025 is just hours away, and you might be wondering what’ll be open in case you need to rush out to get some last-minute items for your party or run some errands on New Year’s Eve.

Most retail stores are open on New Year’s Eve, as well as banks and post offices, but some may close early on Tuesday, Dec. 31.

Here’s what to know about what’s open:

Is New Year’s Eve a federal holiday?

New Year’s Eve is actually not a federal holiday, according to the U.S. Office of Personnel Management, though New Year’s Day is considered a federal holiday.

Walmart stores regularly operate from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. You can always check Walmart.com to find a nearby store and its hours.

Are banks closed on New Year’s Eve?

Branches of Capital One, Bank of America, PNC, Truist and CitiBank, among others, will be open on Dec. 31, Some branches may close early. It is best to check with your bank on specific hours for New Year’s Eve.

Is the postal service open today?

U.S. Postal Service post offices will be open regular hours, and mail will be delivered on Dec. 31, 

Is the stock market open today?

U.S. stock markets will be open on New Year’s Eve day.

The Nasdaq and New York Stock Exchange will both hold regular trading sessions on the final day of 2024 before being closed for New Year’s Day.

The U.S. bond markets will close early on Tuesday, Dec. 31, with trading slated to stop for the year at 2 p.m. ET. and remain closed on New Year’s Day, according to the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association.

Is Hobby Lobby open New Year’s Eve?

Hobby Lobby is open from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on New Year’s Eve, according to its website.

Is UPS open on New Year’s Eve?

UPS pickup for Air and International Air services are only available on New Year’s Eve if prearranged by Dec. 26, the company said on its website. UPS Ground service pickup is not available on Dec. 31.
